Broken Link Checker (100% FREE)

This broken link checker tests the links on a public webpage and shows which ones fail. See the destination URL, the observed response and the anchor text, so you know exactly what to fix.

Free, no signup. Our server reads the page once and requests up to 40 of its links. Nothing is stored.

Which links?

Checks up to 40 unique links on one page. Some sites block automated requests, so a timeout or refusal is reported separately from a real 404. Private addresses are refused. Nothing is stored.

Enter a page URL to test the links on it.

How it works

How to use the Broken Link Checker in three steps.

  1. Step 1

    Choose what to check

Enter a public page URL and choose all links or internal links only.

  2. Step 2

    Read the returned information

Review each failed link with its status, redirects and anchor text.

  3. Step 3

    Use the result

Update the links or add relevant redirects, then check the page again.

A homepage linking to a working product page and a resource link that points to a 404 page, with a fix to update or remove the link

Examples

Link checks, and what they mean.

  • An old case study link

InputA service page linking to a case study that moved.

ResultBroken (404), anchor text "See the results".

Update the link on the page, or redirect the old URL if it's linked from elsewhere too.

  • A site that blocks bots

InputAn external link to a site behind bot protection.

ResultCouldn't reach: the server refused the connection.

Reported separately from a 404, because it may work fine in a browser.

  • A redirect

InputAn http link to a page that now lives on https.

ResultRedirects (301), to the https URL.

Works, but linking straight to the final URL saves a hop.

Good to know

Your results, explained.

  • Prioritise what people use

Fix broken links in navigation and popular content first. A broken internal link can usually be pointed at the correct live page.

  • Don't redirect everything home

An intentionally removed page may need a relevant replacement or a proper 404 or 410, not an automatic redirect to the homepage.

  • What this tool can't tell you

It checks the links on one page, up to 40 of them, and says how many it skipped. Some sites block automated requests, so a timeout or refusal isn't proof a link is broken.

  • What to do next

Repair links that interrupt important journeys first, then recheck the page to confirm the new responses.
